My wife thought this is something that I should keep to myself until a later time, but I know I can put it on here because it is my journey of my thoughts and feelings with my life change and this most definitely is in that category. And besides I know that no one in my immediate family reads this so my secret will still be safe with me. But there is a story that goes with it, so you will have to bear with me to find out my news.
So a couple of weeks ago, I was talking with my supervisor at work, who has been a huge support and great influence on me. Recently, he had some health problems come up in his life that were unexpected to him and his family and he decided to make a life change and has really kicked some butt at it. He has lost a lot of weight and even picked up the sport of running, even when it was difficult for him. As he went through the process, his body adapted and he actually ran a marathon a couple of months ago. Just a great inspiration to me of changing his life and being an example to his family of healthy living. Anyways, I was talking to him about the marathon he ran and we got on the topic of the recent St. George marathon and talking about several people we know who ran it and the times they finished it in. I was telling him about my next door neighbor who ran it it and how he ran it in 4:06:00. A great time if you ask me. But I know a few other people who had run it in 3:48:00 and faster. Truly an amazing accomplishment. We started talking about one of our co-workers who ran the marathon and got a PR for his running. He told me that when he worked in our department he was a little overweight and so he took up running. As he started running and making better choices personally in his diet and life, the pounds started shedding off of him. I told him how I have been struggling with getting my running program going and it always seems like after a couple of weeks, I get hurt and stop the program, or I just get bored with it. And that was that.
Well later in the week I received a phone call from the wellness committee director telling me that I had won the drawing for the month of September and that I had $100 to spend towards anything fitness related. So I decided that I was going to purchase a new pair of running shoes. During my runs lately I have been struggling with sore legs and shin splints. So I went and purchased the new pair of shoes that same night. A couple of days later I brought the shoes to work for my run and showed my supervisor, and I told him that it was my first day to try them out. During my run, the first little bit was a little nerve racking. I thought I had purchased the wrong pair of shoes. My shins didn't hurt, but the muscle up the outsides of my legs above my ankles hurt really bad. At the end of my run though my legs didn't hurt and my run was actually very comfortable. I must interject something here. I am not running 100% of the time. I have never been a runner basically because I have always been overweight and I was a wuss my whole childhood and would never work through the pain of running. So I am gradually working myself into running for 30 minutes straight with a program I found on the internet called Couch to 5K. It is from the website http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/index.shtml
I am on week 4 already and it seems like the first two days of the week suck, but on the last day my runs are great and my body has adapted to the running regimen.
One morning I was talking to my supervisor again about running and how I really enjoyed it now with my new shoes and he said that I he was going to run another marathon. I don't really remember how it came up but we got talking about the Ogden marathon and he said, I'll run it if you run it. It really caught me off guard because running a marathon wasn't in my list of things to do anytime soon. It always looks like a lot of pain. But I started contemplating it, my work will reimburse the cost of the marathon and all I have to do is finish it. I said that I would talk to my wife and see. When I went home that night I decided to do it. So I am running a MARATHON. It's in May. So I figure I have 7 months to train and so I will finish my current workout and by February start my real marathon training. My current plan ends the week before Thanksgiving and I should be able to run for 30 minutes nonstop. My goal is to start another running program that will keep me going through the holidays and into the new year. Life is exciting right now, I feel good and I am trying to stay focused and positive about my goal.
